Le Kurdistan, connue pour son or noir entre autres ressources naturelles, abrite bien d’autres trésors moins connus et peu exploités, des trésors issus de la longue et riche Histoire de la région. Le Kurdistan se situe en effet dans la haute Mésopotamie, où la présence humaine est attestée à partir du Paléolithique moyen, sur le site de la grotte de Shanidar, dans l'actuel Région du Kurdistan d’Irak, où ont été exhumées des sépultures de Néandertaliens.
La Mésopotamie considérée comme le berceau des civilisations est à l’origine de plusieurs évolutions fondamentales de l'histoire humaine, comme l’apparition de l’État, de la ville, des institutions, de l'administration ou encore de l'impérialisme. Les historiens et archéologues contemporains s'accordent à dire que les Mésopotamiens sont à l'origine du premier système d'écriture créé entre 3400 et 3200 av. J.-C et qui évolua pour donner naissance à l’écriture cunéiforme.

La civilisation mésopotamienne prend ses racines dans les évolutions amorcées au Néolithique à partir du Xe millénaire av. J.-C. au Levant, en Anatolie et dans le Zagros, qui voient les débuts de l'agriculture, de l'élevage et l'expansion des villages sédentaires. À compter de la fin du Néolithique, à partir de 7000-6000 av. J.-C., elle connaît un développement rapide, que ce soit dans la démographie, les institutions, l'agriculture, les techniques ou les échanges.
Cette Histoire longue de plusieurs millénaires, qui a vu se succéder nombre de civilisations, d’empires, d’Etats, de conquérants et de peuples, laisse un héritage sans équivalent dans le monde. Ceci est visible de par les richesses archéologiques de la Mésopotamie en général, et du Kurdistan en particulier.

Des premières civilisations mésopotamiennes à l’empire Ottoman ou aux dernières principautés kurdes, des traces de ce passé sont constamment mises à jour depuis quelques années. Auparavant cette richesse n’a jamais vraiment pu être exploitée du fait de l’instabilité politique et des guerres quasi-permanentes au Kurdistan depuis la création de l’Irak.
La seule province d’Erbil, compte 873 sites archéologique répertoriés et pas encore fouillés. Le gouvernement de la Région Autonome du Kurdistan semble mesurer l’importance de ce sujet. Dans chacune de ses quatre provinces, des directions générales des Antiquités sont en charge de la découverte, de la protection et de la mise en valeur de ce patrimoine. À titre d’exemple, aucune construction de bâtiments n’est autorisée sans l’aval de ces administrations qui doivent s’assurer que les terrains concernés n’abritent pas de sites archéologiques importants. Ces directions des Antiquités ont en outre pour mission de répertorier les sites et de donner des autorisations de fouilles, notamment aux nombreuses équipes d’archéologues étrangers qui travaillent au Kurdistan et qui font bénéficier leurs collègues kurdes de leur expérience et des technologies dont ils disposent.
Selon Khalil Barzenji, chef du service de recherche au sein de la direction générale des antiquités d’Erbil, actuellement seulement onze équipes d’archéologues effectuent des fouilles dans cette province.
Néanmoins, malgré la réelle prise de conscience des autorités et des populations quant à l’importance de ce patrimoine, les moyens qui sont alloués à sa protection et à sa mise en valeur sont beaucoup trop faibles par rapport à l’immensité de la tâche. Cela est d’autant plus notable lorsque l’on visite le Musée des Antiquités d’Erbil qui se situe dans un vieux bâtiment du centre de la ville, vraisemblablement pas construit à cet effet. (3. Les vestiges de ce riche passé, allant de vases vieux de plusieurs milliers d’années aux pièces de monnaies de l’époque Ottomane ou des dernières principautés kurdes du 19ème siècle, sont exposés dans quelques petites salles.

La construction d’un grand musée national à Erbil faisait partie des projets du gouvernement régional dans les années 2010, mais la guerre contre l’Etat Islamique en 2014 et les difficultés budgétaires qui persistent depuis font que le projet est toujours au point mort.
Dans un tel contexte il est difficile d’espérer que ce patrimoine exceptionnel, avec un fort potentiel touristique pour la Région, sera mis en valeur à échéance raisonnable.
