Yezidis gathered in the town of Sinuny in Shingal district to commemorate the 9th anniversary of the Yezidi genocide on August 3, 2023. The 2014 genocide that the Islamic State (ISIS) launched against the Yazidis, led to the displacement of 360,000 people, according to the Yazidi Rescue Office. Thousands of others were killed and kidnapped, and over 2,700 remain missing to this day.
