Aucun pape ne s’était jamais déplacé en Irak auparavant. Malgré l’Histoire tumultueuse de violence sectaire et interreligieuse du pays, le chef de l’Église catholique n’avait jamais franchi la frontière irakienne. Cela a changé en 2020. Dans l’espoir d’apporter solidarité et paix aux minorités religieuses historiquement opprimées qui y ont longtemps souffert, le pape François s’est rendu en Irak et au Kurdistan.
Les 72 heures qui
ont suivi ont fait l’objet d’une couverture internationale. Le pape François a
prononcé une messe à Erbil et au stade Franso Hariri qui n’a pas été reçue que
par des milliers de personnes, mais par des centaines de millions dans le monde
entier. C’est l’un des moments les plus importants de l’histoire moderne kurde,
irakienne et catholique.
